And then suddenly, without realising it, Isaac was powering
through the water like he had never done before. With each stroke
he reached out as far as possible in front of him, willing his heart to
keep pumping for only a few seconds longer… just a few seconds.
The end of the pool was only metres away now. His heart beating
ferociously, Isaac powered through the water, and reached out his
left hand to touch the sensory pad at the pool wall.
He had done it. He had won.
With one last, strenuous effort, Isaac heaved himself out of the
pool, before collapsing, his heart beating for the last time.
Isaac Goodman, the Invalid, had succeeded.
